So whats has Steamboat got to offer, once you have decided to try an American Ski resort.
Plenty is the answerer! More so when there is lots of powder, which fortunately happens very often. Not as chic as Aspen or as extensive as Vail, but Steamboat has a character and a heart of its own, which makes Steamboat a real ski town, Wild West style. It offers unique and genuine American Old West Heritage, as well as over 200km of skiing with 165 pistes (or trails), 25 lifts & world-class chalet, apartment and hotel accommodation. It’s the third largest mountain in Colorado and is consistently ranked in the top 10 of all North American ski resorts and voted the top family resort for many years. Fly into Denver, Eagle or closer still into Hayden and sample one of the best and welcoming ski locations in the US.Also known as Ski Town USA, Steamboat offers unique and fabulous hot springs to soothe those aches and pains away. They are truly remarkable.
When considering Steamboat for your next ski holiday, a big bonus for many people who suffer any altitude problems is that Steamboat is located at a lower, more European altitude and lower than its Colorado compatriots. However despite the lower altitude, (6000ft) Steamboat is extremely snow sure, with huge snowfalls every year, averaging around 30ft annually being consistently the snowiest resort in Colorado Learning to ski in such conditions is a pure dream and you cannot but fail to improve.
The terrain suits all levels, with some steep stuff in the back shutes to keep the adrenalin going. The long intermediate and easier blue cruisers from the top are a mixture of excitement and enjoyment, as you speed down to the base, whizzing onto some groomed black runs and into some fabulous tree skiing, with fewer people to hassle you on the slopes. The views over the Yampa valley are wide and absolutely stunning. But take care ogling the views as you are speeding on some of the superbly prepared slopes! Often better to stop at Hazies at the top of the gondola and enjoy the awesome views from there as well as sampling the excellent food and wine they serve.
Accommodation in Steamboat is divided into two connected sections; the Mountain area and Downtown. Staying downtown means you have to shuttle to the slopes but its so convenient for the 50 bars and restaurants on your doorstep, which though a little spread out, actually adds to the atmosphere. You also have the ski convenient Mountain resort village area right by the slopes and gondola, offering more catering and drinking establishments but quieter at night.
Accommodation in Steamboat is of good quality and offers a great choice of hotels or condos, or chalets to suit ANY budget, ranging from the excellent 5 star Steamboat Grand, through to the Steamboat Inn, as well as superb private homes and stunning catered Steamboat chalets.
