Skiing Lake Tahoe is just one of those things you have to do and perhaps more than once. For a ski area it really does tick the boxes with so much terrain, stunning scenery and fabulous accommodation. But one you have decided to travel over to Tahoe, you then you have the difficulty of where to base yourself with such a large choice. Heavenly attracts most skiers initially, more so as it perhaps better known but for those wanting a different and more “up market base” with no casinos and arguably more “family friendly” then on the opposite side of the lake, on the North Shore we have superb Northstar, which takes some beating and more so for families.

Northstar is a resort in its own right offering fabulous skiing in very upscale surroundings. The fact that it bears a resemblance to Beaver Creek in Colorado is not by accident ,as it was built by the same people, East West resorts. Thus the strapline of Beaver Creek of “Not exactly roughing it” also applies to Northstar. From the moment you arrive you know you are somewhere special, with much of the accommodation on or near the slopes. And if you ever get bored of one resort, there is also the superb ski resort of Squaw Valley next door. But Northstar constantly receives accolades and its easy to see why.Sure, its maybe not for those who want an exciting nightlife, thats best left for Heavenly, but for those who like wine bars,4 star accommodations and fine dining, this would be high on our list in the USA and more so for families and couples, as well as early and late skiing and for those where high village altitudes, like say Breckenridge, causes a problem.
