Ski holidays in Breckenridge are very popular, with Breckenridge offering fantastic skiing and a great choice of accommodation close to, or on the slopes. Unlike the newer Keystone, some 6 miles away and on the same ski pass, Breckenridge was founded in 1859 and was an old gold mining town, setting its place in history. The atmosphere is enhanced by clapboard and old western style properties on Main Street, with shopping malls and buildings added in a similar style. The town centre of Breckenridge comes with several accommodation options and is also lively at night, with over 100 restaurants and bars. In every season, the trees are lit up with decorations, giving the town a festive air. Families especially love this twinkly atmosphere, which cannot be replicated elsewhere.
The entire ski area is over 4 mountain “peaks” with almost 150 pistes, which are all interconnected by 23 lifts, with Peak 9 offering some great nursery slopes and which has nearly all gentle, wide blue runs at the top and almost flat, wide green runs at the bottom, excellent for beginners, but with a very steep black run under one of the chair lifts. Surprisingly, over half the slopes are classed as “black” or expert, though much of it is easily skied by the experienced intermediate skier. There is wonderful terrain on all the peaks, but Peaks 7 and 8 excel, especially as they also takes you over to Imperial Bowl, accessed by the highest ski lift in the world, which rises to just short of 13,000ft. Peak 10 offers some great blue/black cruising runs, all in all about 220km of skiable terrain. Come on over and enjoy the awesome snow and friendly American style welcome.
In Breckenridge chalets, hotels and condominiums are spread out over a large wooded area. They are linked, if not on the slopes, by the excellent and frequent, free shuttle service, though some property management companies offer their own private transfer services. The après ski is lively and varied, from Erics bar and the Park Avenue Tavern, through to Breckenridge Microbrewery and Gracey O’Malleys Irish bar. It’s also a pleasant place to wander around at night and shop, or just soak up a little of the western scene and if you fancy a bargain or two, pop over to the factory outlets at Silverthorne, but watch that spending and luggage allowance!
